OVERVIEW

The Vision Panels in the Centennial Student Union Hearth Lounge needed some updating, so my coworker Janessa Roufs and I redesigned these towering 4'x10' panels. We updated the imagery, designed a new pattern reminiscent of the horns used in MSU's mascot, Stomper, while using the current University branding and slogans. The CSU is considered the "living room" of campus, so it needed to represent everything MSU has to offer.

We updated the imagery, designed a new pattern reminiscent of the horns used in MSU's mascot, Stomper, while using the current University branding and slogans. The CSU is considered the "living room" of campus, so it needed to represent everything MSU has to offer.

CHALLENGE

The challenge this project posed us was the size of the project - never before had I designed for something this tall! When sourcing our imagery, we had to make sure the files were large enough to be displayed at this scale, as well as representative of the diversity of programs and activities our University has to offer. We also designed a cut-out - the yellow "horn" motifs that are slightly elevated from the rest of the design.

WHAT WE DID

We designed a patern using quarter-circles as our basis. When playing around with these shapes, I discovered that a horn reminiscent of our mascot could be created from them, which led to the idea of the two horns reflecting across the two panels. After that, the goal was to balance the imagery across both panels - to ensure that it showed not just the classroom, but the activities and events around campus. The left panel has the phrase "Big ideas, Real-world thinking, Inspired action," which is the slogan of MSU. The right panel has the Student Union's slogan, which is to "Invite, Involve, Inspire."

POST PROJECT REFLECTION

This project was awesome to see the finished product of. I remember gasping when i first saw it installed in the Hearth Lounge. They're huge! It is always gratifying as a designer to see your work produced and right in front of you, instead of on your small computer screen. We printed many smaller scale versions of the banners to see how they looked when presented from a distance, which really helped the final product. Searching through the university's photo database for high-res photos was fun, as I recognized some of the students and faculty. I even included my Graphic Design professor, Matt Willemsen, on the left panel (You're welcome, Matt!)
